Treatment Modalities

IFS is a form of talk therapy that focuses on understanding how parts of ourselves can have different, sometimes conflicting, experiences. Rather than focusing solely on the content of what happened, IFS therapy looks at how those internal parts can disrupt the overall system when they aren’t understood and organized.

This process of understanding and organizing depends on the innate ability to care for ourselves. IFS involves building up trust in that capacity for healthy self-compassion, working to resolve unmet needs, and unlearning negative messages about yourself.

This can feel very different from other forms of talk therapy because much of the focus is on what is happening in the body, emotions, and mind in the moment. Building this ability to go inside, help a part to feel calm, and establish harmony between parts can have a profound impact in reducing symptoms and overcoming future difficulties.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Eye Movement Desensitization

and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a bottom-up form of therapy that uses external stimuli to support the brain and body in processing experiences, emotions, or memories which are unresolved. This model of therapy uses a phased-approach to ensure that you are prepared and supported at each step in the process

Beginning with a period of evaluation and preparation, EMDR works to systematically stabilize a sense of self and control while preparing to move through each target experience in turn.

During the reprocessing phase, an EMDR session may not involve as much talking as other forms of therapy. Instead, brief rounds of eye movements, taps, or tones stimulate both sides of the brain in order to help your system stay regulated and move through the target experience without getting stuck.

EMDR is endorsed by the World Heath Organization as a gold-standard treatment for PTSD.
